Week 7’s Blog on Wiki: lesson 15

September 21, 2007

I used the wikipedia once in a while and already know the basic idea of the editing and posting new things up. To me, the wiki is sort of like an online bulletin board and can be considered another technique of communication. I do like the idea of using the wiki to post and edit for my friends to see and do things with it. In fact I know of one way this can help not only me but have the others like libraries, teachers, and other people. What I’m thinking of using this as is to use it to have one’s assignment assessed and fixed. For instance, a student would be doing an essay assignment and needed as much corrections from many people as possible. He would post it up and let people who see it correct the document. The library can help out patrons in that way also. They can help student patrons with their homework, post updates, make announcements to coworkers and have them respond, and more. The set up is very organized too with the linking and catagorizing. Although there is a downfall to this site that I have learned over the time of using it. My sister learned this from her class that although great, the page can be vandalized also. Because so many people can input the page like a real bulletin board, people can access and vandalize the page by erasing topics, words, messages, etc on purpose just for the fun of it. Although I really do like the idea of using the wiki like a big display board, it might be too easy access for others to ruin. People can intentionally erase messages, words, topics, etc just for the fun of ruining it. The idea is good, but there’s still some adjustments that wiki needs to fix so that the vandalization doesn’t occur.

week 6 lesson 12,13,14: bookmarking, Technorati, and Library Thing

September 13, 2007

The idea of social bookmarking is interesting, even honestly I never really use it since I practically carry my laptop everywhere and for me I tend to save things using the “favorites” rather than “bookmarking” sites. But after a while of clicking here and there I can see why and how it can be an advantage to alot of people. I see how the bookmarking and then tagging works but for some reason for me it’s sorta the same as creating a folder for the websites (tag) and then favoriting (bookmarking) my fav sites. I do like the idea that you can save the sites onto a website so that you can see it on other computers too, but I don’t really want people to be seeing the things that I bookmark because I may be bookmarking my friend’s myspace or the like and they wouldn’t like the idea of someone else being able to see the site since it’s being dispayed publicly. However I can see how it is useful for research assistance because since others are able to see and keep adding and bookmarking each other’s sources of websites that are useful to them in their research, it helps them out by showing new sources. In my opinion, like many things, there are pros and cons to new types of things, and for me I find it a bit easier for me to just favorite the site and leave it on my personal computer. If I want to have different URLs to use later on I would email them to myself since i don’t see why I have to publicly post my links to the public.

For the Technorati, there seems to be different ways to search for the blogs. The tags searches sort of broadens the search in a more vague way, so instead of being the exact blog with main topic sometimes it has some parts of what you want to look for in it. I guess this site might be very good for what I’m doing as a side job right now. I would like to advertise more about my workplace because they need more customers, but then it’s going to be a bit difficult using the “blog” as a way to advertise out business. Also, there are pros and cons to the usage of this site. Pros are great to let people find your blogs (although I find it hard to advertise) the cons are for those who do not like their blogs publicly shown, it would not appeal to them. Also, if people don’t know Technorati, they wouldn’t really use it much just to find a blog. I for example, sorta just google it, even though someone might think it’s a hassle, but I’m used to it so it doesn’t bother much. This search site for blogs might be useful for some but for those who don’t really blog often (like me), it probably won’t do much of a change.

My site for my library catalog: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/waruixman

I find it interesting to find books I want this way, even though at most I still might have to buy them off amazon.com and stuff. But I can see if other people have copies of the book I want too and it’s a bit easier to search for books than just looking through amazon only like most people would. Also because most of the mangas are in series, I can see if the next series had came out so I can find it. It’s interesting how there are lots of other posts of the same book and there’s the ISBN number to look it up at libraries or bookstores.

Week 5 Lesson 9 blog

September 4, 2007

I think that it would be a new turn and view towards how libraries’ resources would be communicated across the state and even across the country. Myspace and facebook are practically a worldwide communicating, viewing, entertaining source. Although never tried before, it may be a beginning towards being able to communicate with the other side of the world with our library resources. For instance, by placing the library site out there, it is easier for people to locate than memorizing the actual URL of the sunnyvale library, and not only that, but people from other parts of the world can use the features of myspace or facebook to ask us questions and what sources we have. We can even display our activities on videos and show them to the public to draw their interest. Also, it would be another great blog source for people to look at for any updates since it is more likely that patrons (mostly kids, teens, and young adults) on activities or special updates on new medias. Although I still rarely use myspace, I sometimes still can’t help but check up on people on my friends list. So even if there are those out there that rarely uses myspace, they will eventually check to see what’s new or might even ask for help. I use facebook alot to find people to who can help me on my subjects in school. The library’s myspace or facebook can be use as a source of help too.
