If there was a lesson 28 I think it would be nice to teach people to use torrents. It’s a type of program that most sites are starting to change their downloadable files into. Nowadays almost everything that you want to find (movies, books, musics) are in torrents for you to download and then extract to view them. I had taught my cousins to use torrents when they really wanted to find movies to watch on their computer. Normal searches will 90% of the time not show up the movies straight up as a movie file. You have to use torrents to download and get the actual files themselves out. I used torrents to download textbooks too. Also as for applications we did, I can extend the one that was about youtube. There’s another place now that’s just as good as youtube, called veoh. For youtube you cannot download the clips you want on your computer nor can you search for everything it has because of the random regulations on what types of videos can be shown. Veoh, however, let’s you download the clips and even full length movies and episodes. You can watch them using the program they asked you to download called VeohTV. It is really fun to use and better quality than youtube. This has been a great experience doing this program. Thanks for everything.
Week 12 Lesson 26: Tell Us What You Think
October 26, 2007What were your favorite Learning 2.0 discoveries or exercises? This program has been a really great help to me in some parts of my school work and I’m hoping to keep on using some of the program’s materials for other uses in my spare time. My favorite Learning 2.0 discoveries were the google docs/zoho, the Flickr lessons, and RSS feeds lesson. Some of the lessons surprised me because as much as I know about computers, there are some applications I never knew about until I did this learning 2.0. I didn’t really need help using this, it was pretty manageable and understandable for me. Although I think for others who don’t know much english it might seem tedious to read. I think it would be a great thing is the program had more of those youtube vids on the instructions on how to do each different lessons’ activities. It really simplifies the textual information by giving us a visual. I would like to see similar training opportunities like this. It’s a great once in a while activity that helps us learn something new and interesting. I’m pretty much satisfied with what this program has to offer and don’t have an idea yet in mind on what else should be covered in the lesson. I would really like to participate in this program because it really helps me discover more of what the web has to offer.
Week 11 Lesson 25: Something to do with that MP3 player
October 26, 2007This site is pretty interesting, but not alot of things I wanted is on there. There’s probably another site that’s similar to this, but I haven’t explored much on it. Anywho, it would be nice if there were more music and book varieties. I would probably use torrents to search for books and music to download; that’s how I’ve been doing it and probably best stick to it.
Week 11 Lesson 24: Podcasts
October 26, 2007I think this podcasting is pretty interesting. My school already did some podcastings for our classes. They practically use podcast to record their lectures and post them up for the students. Although I never used it yet myself, I think it would be nice to try and use.
Week 11 Lesson 23: Video in the Post-Betamax World
October 19, 2007I used youtube alot for interesting clips on pranks, magic tricks/illusions, latest ideas on technologies and so on. But over the time period they had change the limit for the time frame for videos. In the beginning people are able to upload videos that are 1 hour and more, but now they minimize it to a mere minutes, maybe not even 1/2 hour worth. I see that this is useful because like the past lessons that used the youtube for demonstrating how programs work, this might work well for library use on showing how people can use the library’s sources. I just like this for pure enjoyment of watching different ideas and clips.
Week 10 Lesson 22: Choose Your Own Adventure
October 19, 2007I first checked some of the items for the Web 2.0 page and saw that for social networking, face book was the top choice which is very interesting because I would’ve thought that myspace would be on there somewhat, but I guess facebook’s new features really gave it a notch up. http://www.thefacebook.com. I would use this once in a while to see how my friends are doing in school and stuff. Has practically everything that myspace has, all except putting music and background pic on the profiles.
For webware I found very random and yet sites I’ve never heard of. The Marble of Doom is a pretty funky thing to be looking at while “waiting” at the computer for things to load. http://marbleofdoom.com/ I guess it’s okay to do, but after a while I don’t see any real excitement in it hahahaha.
I find the facebook to be useful, but as for the marble of doom, well, that can be ignored unless someone’s really bored.
Week 10 Lesson 21: Labs of Google
October 19, 2007I tested out the “Accessible Search” for the visually impaired and Google Web Accelerator. I was curious about how the google made google an “accessible search” for visually impaired people, so I checked it out and didn’t see any difference whatsoever. What’s more, I was was wondering how it was considered for the visually impaired if it makes them read it…I mean, they cannot see well and yet there’s no change from the usual search and viewing (i.e. no bigger font, sound input, etc). The Web Accelerator was interesting even though it has to be downloaded. It does make pages pop up superfast, but then again, I think this would be better for those who have slower computer. Otherwise I only see a tiny difference in page loading.
Week 10 Lesson 20: Online Productivity Software
October 19, 2007I have never even seen this side of google or heard of zoho before, but after seeing what it does I am really astounded at what benefit this can give me. I’m one of those people who: after typing my paper up on my computer, I save the document and email it to myself so that I would work on it elsewhere like the library and then when I’m done I save it again and email it back to myself again. After seeing this, I really want to start using this. I talked to many of my friends and they never heard of it, but they really liked the idea after I explained to them what it is and does. This would really save a lot of work and effort. Of the two I liked zoho better because it has more programs and you don’t have to upload the document before you start working on it. I really like this way of working online.
Week 9: lesson 19: Library 2.0
October 4, 2007It is true to a point when I do think that it is a phrase for “new technology” at some point but then there are couple of other things about it that makes it unique and not just technology. With all the things I’ve been doing on this program I find it a great experience and great interactions. The way the system is set up might help quite alot of patrons interact more with the library on the web, but I find there are people out there that still enjoys the use of the traditional library, which one would come into a quiet place, walk in and talk to the information desk crew, roam and search in the library, and meet people in person. There are different views on this and it’s really hard for me to decide whether one is preferred over another. Sometimes I do like this usage of internet to interact and do many interesting things and learn that way, but then I find it, in reality, not a real way to socialize and lacks the fun of going out. If the webbing system spreads too much I find the future quite hard to imagine. For instance, if they spread and even do a webbing system for museums just so more people can interact and learn more, then it’s going to ruin the actual idea of experiencing the roaming and touring of the real museum. It may benefit many as for the convenience of their own home, but it just loses the feeling of the experience.
Week 9 lesson 18: custom search engines
October 4, 2007I’m more used to the google search format and it seems the google search engine has more articles and more detailed description than that of the rollyo. Also I find it easier to look at the google search engine than the rollyo because it has a more clearer and simpler format. I didn’t really like the margined links on the side with lots of different random links, making it almost look like an advertisement. I think the customized search engine is very interesting and unique. I showed it to my friends and they thought it was pretty cool how we can have our own customized search engine however we like to format them. It’s like a blogging site which we can customize however we like, except this is a search engine. The things the search engine found is quite a variety and I can find this useful, especially for those who are students who are looking up articles for their research papers they can use this customized search engine that the svpl made so they can find them easier. My school has something like this, but it’s their own search engine called Cruzcat which are for students at UC Santa Cruz to use.
My Google Customized Search Engine (although I didn’t really do much to my profile): http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=016500902480813264437%3Apivqlb_jvcw&hl=en
